The Year in Review
by Ken Shaw
co-leader Friends of Schmitz Park
The year 2003 was our 6th consecutive year of logging about two
thousand hours of volunteer time. Congratulations to everyone who made this
possible!
Here is how it breaks out:
97 Friends of Schmitz Park work parties totaling over 1200 hours
Freelance workers with 800 hours
Visiting groups with 180 hours
Friends of Schmitz Park volunteers worked more than two thirds of all of
last year and averaged 38 hours per week. 124 volunteers were recorded: 38
men, 38 women, 48 teens and children. Volunteers performed 67 distinct
tasks.
Special thanks to visiting groups:
Corbis United Day of Caring
Starbuck’s Earth Week
City Year: Young Heroes
Alki Community Center Children, (2 groups)
YMCA Earth Service Corps
Thanks to everyone who helped. We especially appreciate the uncounted but
very helpful park visitors who pick up after others and keep us informed
about trail conditions while most of our time is concentrated on the
continuing naturalization of the Schmitz Creek drainage project site.
You should all be proud that we helped to keep Seattle’s preserve of old
growth native forest among the most delightfully surprising places to visit
during the 2003 Olmsted Centennial walking tours. In only four more years we
will celebrate the centennial of Emma and Ferdinand’s wonderful gift to
Seattle.
